Cover Girl Inspiration By Sue Bryce

Adrienne Beacco on Model Mayhem The other day, I had a shoot planned with a model who had gotten sick at the last minute. I had already asked Adrienne if she wanted to assist, so instead, she came by and we worked on the posing techniques I had learned from watching Sue Bryce on CreativeLIVE. I had no idea what to expect, but one major surprise was how deceptively difficult the poses were. They look so... read more

Four Umbrella Madness With Carisa

Another from the Don Giannatti Workshop, this one of Carisa. I absolutely LOVED this set up with the four matching umbrellas, and can’t wait to use it again. It’s one of those setups that I’d just like to keep up permanently…like Peter Hurley does with his Kino Flos. I just might Final: Retouch comparison: Close up: Detail: Studio shot: Don’s video of the shoot: Photos... read more

Chillin’ With Riley – Retouch Comparison

Retouch comparison: Another from the Don Giannatti Workshop held at my studio last weekend. This one is of Riley. The inspiration behind the post processing comes again from Joel Grimes. I love that bright high key look he does. Comparing this one to the original afterwards, I had no idea how drastic the post was. Not exactly as bright as I wanted, but I’ll have to work up to that. I did try a few... read more

Snow White

I recently acquired a handful of wigs, and Carisa was game enough to sport a few during our recent shoot. I loved this one and chose to process it first. Final: Side by side comparison: Close up comparison: Total processing time took the usual 10+ hrs. Honestly, I never really know how long, ’cause after 8 or so, I just lose track. At that point, it might as well be 8 days, since that’s how... read more

Adrienne – Red

Another from my shoot with Adrienne. Interesting thing with this photo. If this were not my photo, and I just looked at the finished image, I would probably assume it was retouched (obviously… NO ONE has skin that perfect), but it’s not until I compare it to the original, that I see it was MASSIVELY retouched. I wouldn’t have had any idea… and I did it! Realizing this, I know that... read more

Adrienne

My first experience with Model Mayhem was a great one Adrienne came by the studio for a shoot and we had so much fun! Her sister ShaeLee was a fabulous assistant and it was great that she came along. When it was all said and done, we captured 375 images. Here’s my first edit. Thanks to Calvin Hollywood for his awesome masking technique that made my life so much easier! After: Side by side... read more

Sometimes, after spending 14+ hours on a photo, all you get is disappointment. That’s what happened here. Composites are a real challenge for me. After watching Joel Grimes new class on Kelby Training, I thought I’d test out the new techniques I learned. He says his composites take on average between 2-4 hours. How nice would that be? Well, I set out to do a photo that I hoped the young man... read more

The Thinker

I got my new 5′ Photoflex Octabank a few days back and couldn’t wait to try it out. Had no idea how to use it and things were a bit cramped, with the modifier touching the ceiling. I managed to get one that I liked, although Fred thinks he looks a bit downtrodden. I think that what I’ve read about a large size modifier, especially the Octa, is true… it’s like cheating. I hope... read more

The Mess Maker – Composite

Yeah, it’s not the best crop I’ve looked at this one for so many hours now, that I don’t know what to think. I hope that after a few days I love it, but who knows… I may hate it… The background image was taken in the semi-abandoned town of Cisco, just outside of Moab, Utah. Inspired by Joel Grimes. **Kelby Training just released Joel’s first class ‘Creative... read more

Late For The Train – Composite

This photo was inspired by Atlanta based photographer, Ryan Gibson. Ever since I saw this photo of his in the January 2012 issue of Popular Photography, I’ve wanted to recreate it. Fred was nice enough to model for me. Unfortunately, most of my exposures were way too dark… how disappointing One day I’m gonna figure this stuff out. I hope… After: The background, an abandoned rail... read more
